Dhikr of life
After the success of Heaven (2003) it was only a matter of time before Khaleel set about recording his second album. And now its here at last!
Dhikr of Life is packed with 10 tracks covering a central theme that declares the remembrance (Dhikr) of Allah and His Messenger(s). The album is bright, soothing and deeply reflective. Khaleel has once again managed to blend soulful harmonies and traditional sounds to create another truly ground breaking album.
‘Heaven was my début and a testing of the waters in terms of what I wanted to contribute to the growing nasheed market but it is also represents a journey of self discovery of what my own personal musical style would be. I’ve learnt a lot since Heaven…’
Enlisting the help of world-renowned Raihan member, Abu Bakar who acted as producer on the album, Khaleel flew out to record the album in the sweltering Malaysian heat. What was it like working with Abu Bakar and how did that collaboration come about? “You know, we met during the 8 city French Rhythm ‘n’ Nasheed tour last December and straight way I appreciated his ideas for production and rhythm. Abu Bakar is such a cool guy! Initially I had sent over demos of all the songs which he put percussion on, so by the time I got there only the lead and some backing vocals where needed to complete the tracks!”
“It’s a lot of hard work and took a bit of doing but we got there in the end. Malaysia is truly a beautiful country, I’d love to go back.’ said Khaleel clutching a copy of the new album. But we wonder! International flights to Malaysia, 2 weeks in the Hilton hotel, recording sessions in the studio with members of Raihan and local rappers, a weeks filming in some of the most exotic parts of Malaysia – hard work?? ‘I love the nasheed industry and it can only get better insha’Allah.’
Accompanied by Meem Records managing director Tayyeb Shah, Khaleel and Abu Bakar worked long into the wee hours of the night while labouring on the new album. ‘I’m pleased with the results. My personnel favourites are ‘Long Ago, ‘I Believe’ and ‘Welcome to Madinah’ SkyBorn performance manager and DayDreamin’ author Isha D. Maison also contributes to the album and provided narration on ‘I Believe- Gabriel Hadith’ and also penned a song.
‘It was fun…’ states Isha ‘Khaleel grabbed me and said write a catchy children’s song. So after some thought I came up with ‘Love Allah’. It argues that if we love our toys, sweets and food (popcorn in particular ha h a) then we should surely love the One who gave it all to us – Allah!’
Khaleel chuckles. Isha must have written that song in under 10 minutes! Now that’s talent for you!’ Check out the video to that song here!
Also on the new album are two traditional songs ‘Blessed Mustafa’ made famous by fellow label mates Arshiq Al Rasul, and the most famous nasheed of all time ‘Tala al Badr Alaina’.
‘I love those songs so the first chance I got I recorded them – in my style of course. I envisioned a Disney type feel with big kettle drums and soaring harmonies – and that’s what Abu Bakar gave me!’
